Critical Need for Traffic-Free Cycle Route to Planned New Leisure Centre to Alleviate Town’s Congestion Woes

The proposals for a new leisure centre in Leighton Buzzard has been met with mixed reactions the town’s residents. However, the absence of a direct traffic-free cycle route has raised significant concerns about exacerbating existing congestion issues and thwarting efforts to combat climate change.

Leighton BuzzCycles is hopeful that Central Bedfordshire Council will realise this omission is only going to hinder attempts to reduce congestion across Leighton Buzzard and Linslade, and will quickly redesign the plans to include a cycle route and thus encourage more residents to cycle to the Leisure Centre once it opens.

The absence of a safe and direct cycle route poses a dual threat to Leighton Buzzard. First, it perpetuates the town’s congestion problems by limiting viable transportation options for residents and visitors. Second, it undermines the town’s progress toward meeting climate change targets, hindering efforts to reduce carbon emissions and promote greener modes of transport.

“We recognise the importance of the new leisure centre for our community, but we cannot overlook the critical need for sustainable infrastructure,” remarked a concerned resident. “Fostering cycling as a viable transport option not only eases congestion but also aligns with our collective responsibility to address climate change.”

Not only is the lack of a cycle route an unfortunate omission from the plans for the new public amenity, but it also actually breaks National Planning Policy Framework guidance which states that walking and cycling should be prioritised over motor traffic for new developments.

The plea for a traffic-free cycle route echoes the sentiments of many, urging Central Bedfordshire Council to reconsider its plans and fulfil its commitments to a more sustainable future. Incorporating a dedicated cycle path within the leisure centre’s design isn’t just a matter of convenience; it’s a crucial step toward honouring environmental pledges and alleviating congestion woes in Leighton Buzzard.
