The gap in the cycle path on Stanbridge Road—from the bus stop near the Fraserfields Way roundabout to just past the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) site—has finally been closed with 300 metres of new shared-use pedestrian and cycle path.

This work, delivered by Central Bedfordshire Council, provides a vital link connecting the new housing and business estates to the town and local shops. Previously, people were left with the choice of walking in the road or navigating an uneven, often muddy verge.

Community Benefits
This newly completed section delivers immediate benefits for our community. By replacing a muddy, treacherous verge with a smooth, dedicated surface, it opens up a safe, accessible route for pedestrians, cyclists, mobility scooters, and parents with pushchairs alike.
By closing this final gap, the route now creates 3.2 miles of continuous, safe cycle path stretching all the way from Marley Fields to Heath Road. It also provides a seamless 2.1-mile continuous cycle path direct to the new leisure centre. Crucially, it gives residents in the new developments a practical, sustainable alternative to driving for short trips to local shops and leisure facilities—helping reduce traffic while making active travel a safer, everyday choice.
To ensure everyone can make use of this new connection right away, Buzzcycles has already mapped and added the new cycle path to OpenStreetMap (OSM). This means popular route planners and navigation apps—including Komoot, Strava, CycleStreets, cycle.travel, and OsmAnd—will now automatically include this safe link in their route calculations.
Looking Ahead
Leighton Buzzcycles has campaigned for this critical link ever since Fraserfields Way opened, and we are delighted that the work is now complete. This was one of several missing links between the new estates and the existing town identified by our team. One down, many more to go—rest assured, we will not give up!
